How Does CAT Percentile Predictor Work?

The calculation method for both the individual section of the CAT and the overall percentiles of all the candidates participating in the CAT exam follows the same formula. Irrespective of the candidates’ category or examination time slot, the CAT score is derived using the formula provided below:

P = (R/N) × 100

where,

P = Percentile ranking

R = The candidate’s rank, which is established by their scaled CAT score or the total number of candidates ranking lower than them.

N = The total count of candidates who appeared for the CAT exam (across all three sessions).

For instance, if there are 1,000 candidates taking the CAT exam, and someone (A) secures the highest rank, it implies that 999 candidates have performed relatively lower than candidate A. Consequently, A’s percentile would be 99.9 (999/1000*100).

CAT Percentiles Calculation 2023 by IIMs 

The percentile calculation process used by IIMs to determine a candidate’s percentile score follows specific steps provided below. These steps are applied to calculate both the overall and sectional percentiles in CAT 2023. IIM calculates the CAT percentile 2023 of candidates across all three sections as well as the overall percentile. 

To explain the percentile calculation process, we have provided the example of VARC sectional percentile calculation. A similar procedure is used for calculating percentiles in the other two sections, namely Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability in CAT 2023.

• Calculate the total count of candidates (N) who participated in CAT. This includes all the candidates taking CAT in the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions.
• Assign a rank (r) to all candidates who took the CAT exam based on the scaled scores they achieved in the VARC section. In cases where two or more candidates achieve identical scaled scores in the VARC section, they are assigned the same rank. For instance, if two candidates obtain the highest scaled score in the VARC section, both of them are given a rank of 1. Likewise, candidates with the second-highest scaled score in the VARC section are assigned a rank of 3, and so forth.
• Calculate a candidate’s percentile score (P) with rank (r) in the VARC section using the formula: P = ( (N – r) / N ) x 100.
• Round the computed percentile score (P) for a candidate to two decimal points. For example, all percentile scores equal to or greater than 99.995 are rounded up to 100, those equal to or greater than 99.985 but less than 99.995 are rounded to 99.99, and so on.
